Things to do:
Copper was discovered at Burra by two shepherds in 1845. This saw Burra grow to a population of 5,000 by the mid 19th century. The town is known to many as a historic copper mining town. The town was heritage listed in 1994 for its many historic sites.
In the latter half of the 20th century the region became famous as the home of some of Australia's top merino sheep studs. It took on the name as the Merino Capital of the World!
Located only 154 kms from Adelaide, and 48 kms from the famous Clare Valley wine region, it is only a 30 minute drive to the vineyards and wineries of the Clare Valley.
Burra is an ideal base to discover the local mining history and the towns extensive heritage. Yoiu can visit the Burra Visitor Information Centre and buy a key to the town - your Burra Passport will allow you self guided access to heritage sites and museums.
Or discover the sheer beaty of the pastoral country surrounding Burra with a drive through the rugged station country on the scenic Dare’s Hill circuit, learn about local megafauna discoveries, visit the many nature spots such as Burra Creek Gorge, or Redbanks conservation park, to walk or cycle the Mawson & Heysen Trails.
There is so much to do - stay another night to ensure you have time to appreciate local art, to taste quality wine, cider and produce, or see the massive wind farms of Mt Bryan, Hallett & Jamestown, and much more..
Getting There:
Burra Motor Inn is located right in the centre of the heritage copper mining town of Burra.
Coming from Adelaide turn off the Barrier Highway (Highway 32) into the town of Burra, go through Market Square (the town centre) and the Burra Motor Inn is on your right - opposite the Anglican and Catholic churches.
Coming from Morgan, turn off into Burra, over the Kingston Bridge and turn right in Market Square. The Burra Motor Inn is on your right - opposite the Anglican and Catholic churches.
Coming from Broken Hill, follow the Barrier Highway (32) into the town of Burra, through Burra North, past the Mine Chimney and the Burra Motor Inn is on your left - opposite the Anglican and Catholic churches.
